IBOOLO Dermatoscope Compatibility Guide Smartphones, Tablets and Cameras

One of the most common questions we receive before a customer buys an IBOOLO dermatoscope is simple: “Will it fit my phone?”

Some users also want to connect a dermatoscope to a tablet for a larger screen, while others prefer to capture dermoscopic images with a dedicated camera.

At IBOOLO, we have designed our dermatoscope connection system to be as flexible as possible. Most smartphones and tablets can connect through a universal adapter, while selected handheld IBOOLO dermatoscopes can also connect to compatible cameras through a 49 mm magnetic ring.

In this guide, we explain how each connection method works, which camera lens should be used on a multi-camera phone, how a universal adapter differs from a dedicated phone case, and how to connect selected IBOOLO dermatoscopes to a camera.

Can IBOOLO Dermatoscopes Fit Most Smartphones and Tablets?

Yes. IBOOLO dermatoscopes are designed to work with most mainstream smartphones and tablets through a universal phone adapter. This includes iPhone models, Samsung smartphones and many other common Android devices. The adapter does not depend on a specific phone model. Instead, it is physically aligned with the device's main camera.

The connection process is straightforward:

1. Clip the universal adapter onto the smartphone or tablet.

2. Align the opening of the adapter with the main camera.

3. Screw the magnetic ring into the threaded recess of the universal adapter.

4. Attach the IBOOLO dermatoscope magnetically to the ring.

Once the optical axis of the dermatoscope is aligned with the phone camera, the dermoscopic image can be viewed directly on the screen and photographed or recorded.

For all IBOOLO models, the universal phone adapter and magnetic ring are already included in the standard package, so users normally do not need to purchase these accessories separately.

Which Camera Lens Should You Use on a Multi-Camera Smartphone?

Modern smartphones often have two, three or even more rear cameras. These may include a main wide-angle camera, ultra-wide camera, telephoto camera or macro camera.

For dermoscopic imaging, the dermatoscope should normally be aligned with the main camera. If you are not sure which lens is the main camera, there is a very simple way to identify it. Open the phone camera application and keep the normal camera view active. Then cover each rear camera lens one by one with your finger. When covering one particular camera makes the image on the screen become completely dark or almost completely blocked, that is usually the active camera lens being used for the current view. That is the lens that should be aligned with the dermatoscope adapter.

Why Can the Image Turn Black After the Dermatoscope Is Connected?

One common issue on multi-camera smartphones is automatic lens switching. Some phones automatically switch to a macro or another camera when an object is very close to the lens. This is convenient for ordinary photography, but it can create problems when a dermatoscope is physically aligned with only one camera.

For example, the dermatoscope may be correctly aligned with the main camera. But when the phone detects a close subject, the camera software may automatically switch to the macro lens. Because the macro lens is not aligned with the dermatoscope, the screen may suddenly become dark or completely black.

If this happens, disable automatic macro switching or automatic lens switching in the phone camera settings where possible. Then keep the phone on the camera that is physically aligned with the dermatoscope.

How Does a Universal Adapter Compare With an IBOOLO Dedicated Phone Case?

Both methods allow users to capture dermoscopic images with a smartphone, but they are designed for different usage habits.

The universal adapter focuses on flexibility. It can be moved between different smartphones and tablets, making it useful for clinics, distributors and users who frequently change devices.

The dedicated phone case focuses on convenience and fixed alignment. IBOOLO has developed dedicated cases for selected iPhone and Samsung models. Instead of clipping an adapter onto the phone each time, the user can connect directly through the threaded interface built into the case.

For standard handheld IBOOLO dermatoscopes, the connection process is:

Dedicated Phone Case → Magnetic Ring → Dermatoscope

The magnetic ring is screwed directly into the threaded camera interface of the case, and the dermatoscope then attaches magnetically to the ring.

For the compact DE-300 and DE-400, the process is even simpler. These models can be screwed directly into the dedicated phone case, so no magnetic ring is required:

This makes the dedicated case especially useful for users who capture dermoscopic images frequently with the same smartphone.

Can IBOOLO Dermatoscopes Connect to a Camera?

All IBOOLO handheld dermatoscopes can also be connected to a camera. Compared with smartphone installation, the connection process is even simpler because no universal phone clip is required. IBOOLO currently provides a 49 mm camera magnetic ring.

The basic connection process is:

Camera → 49 mm Magnetic Ring → IBOOLO Dermatoscope

Screw the 49 mm magnetic ring onto the compatible camera lens interface. The handheld dermatoscope can then attach magnetically to the ring.

At present, camera connection is supported by the following IBOOLO handheld models:

The camera itself does not necessarily need to have a native 49 mm interface. If the lens interface uses another size, the user can add an appropriate 49 mm filter adapter, step-up ring, step-down ring or compatible lens adapter so that the final external thread becomes 49 mm. The IBOOLO magnetic ring can then be installed onto that 49 mm interface.

Which IBOOLO Dermatoscope Connection Method Is Right for You?

The best connection method depends mainly on how often the dermatoscope is used and which imaging device is preferred.

If different phones or tablets are used regularly, the universal adapter offers the greatest flexibility.

If the same smartphone is used every day for dermoscopic imaging, a dedicated phone case can reduce setup time and provide a more fixed camera position.

For the compact DE-300 and DE-400, direct threaded connection to a dedicated phone case creates an especially simple smartphone imaging setup.

For users who prefer dedicated camera photography, selected IBOOLO handheld dermatoscopes can connect through the 49 mm camera magnetic ring.

At IBOOLO, our goal is not to limit dermoscopy to one screen or one imaging device. Whether you prefer a smartphone, tablet, direct naked-eye observation or a compatible camera, the connection system can be selected according to your workflow.
